What a little sweetheart!
He's much more alert and squirmy now.
Constantly yanks his oxygen tubes off his face
Loves to crane his neck around to look at Ethan.
AND he's a cuddler! I LOVE it!
We went to the hospital last week for more chest x-rays and received the results on Monday at his one month doctor appointment. Dr. Lofgren was happy to let us know that Austin's x-rays came back completely normal with no signs of his pneumathorax (holes in his lungs)!
Quick explanation of pneumathorax:
The easiest way to explain it is that the "thorax" is the space inside the chest that contains your lungs, heart, and a bunch of major blood vessels and "pneumathorax" is a hole in this space. These holes cause a condition where ambient air enters the chest cavity between the lungs and the lining of the chest cavity and puts pressure on the heart and blood vessels. It can cause the lungs to collapse because it allows air to fill the cavity without filling the lungs. Lung collapse can mean suffocation without medical treatment.
So his heart and lungs look great and Dr. Lofgren told us we could take Austin off his oxygen but keep his monitor on him for 24 hours to see how he does without it. Austin's oxygen levels need to stay above 92% saturation before we can take him off the monitor and oxygen all together.
We removed his oxygen tubes when we got home but over the course of the night he kept dropping below 92% and wanted to hang out around 68%-88%. This means his monitors were going off every few minutes all night long and they are super loud! His lungs still need just a little extra help. We are currently working on weaning him off by doing room-air tests several times a day. He's able to go for a few hours before his stats start tanking so we'll be keeping the O2 around for awhile longer until he can stay above 92% on a more consistent basis.
Overall, it's great news and despite his oxygen levels Austin's a healthy, happy little baby

Hooray!!! What an adorable little guy! It's so good to hear how you're doing. I'm glad he was able to get off oxygen. He is an absolute angel!
